About Our Income Generating Projects

Capstone’s ultimate goal is to be a viable program that is self-sustainable through local income generating projects.

These projects will have a local market identified in the community and will reduce donor dependency.  The ministry’s goal is to accomplish this in phases. By the end of 2011, Capstone would like our local budget to be 50% supported by these income generating projects. 

Currently we are working to develop two areas.  One is the moringa tree leaf powder.  Moringa is an indigenous tree, the leaves of which have medicinal properties that can boost the immune system.  The market for this powder is already established and the demand is high.  Marketing of the leaf powder is underway and there is great promise for this product in the local market.

The other development is in raising dairy goats.  In the Vihiga District, already 2000 high breed dairy goats are registered.  They are accepted in the community and goat milk is in high demand by the local people and even private hospitals.  A private donor in California has allowed us to build our first goat house, train our staff and purchase our first two high breed goats called German Alpines. 

Eventually milk and even the offspring will be sold in the local market. Dairy goats will also help to stabilize the families of restored children. As an example, one high breed dairy goat that is well fed can produce from 3-4 liters of milk per day. Goat milk sells in the market for 100-120 shillings (about $1.50) per liter.

A family under the financial stress of poverty survives on less than 70 shillings ($1) per day. One goat can add $5-6 each day to the income stream and stabilize the family.  But the benefit goes far beyond creating stability. For income that is generated from the work and sweat of the family creates pride and hope. This is much more sustainable than assistance that comes from outside.
